Audiochuck and Black and Missing Foundation Partner to Support the Next Generation of Communications and Criminal Justice Leaders
Spring and Fall 2023 fellowships and scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students
INDIANAPOLIS – September 19, 2022 – audiochuck has partnered with the Black and Missing Foundation (BAMFI) to sponsor a communication and law enforcement fellowship and scholarship program. The partnership will support the next generation of leaders in the communication and criminal justice fields for the 2023 spring and fall semesters. The fellowship program is open to communications majors that will spend a semester working in the BAMFI public relations department. The scholarship is available to students pursuing a major or minor in criminal justice.
Ashley Flowers, founder and CEO of audiochuck, and Natalie and Derrica Wilson, founders of BAMFI, share a mutual passion and commitment to advocacy for those who do not have a voice. Media coverage is key in bringing awareness to and finding missing persons of color. There must be more diversity in the newsroom and law enforcement agencies must understand the importance and urgency of these cases. The goal of the partnership is to continue to provide financial support for students that pursue a communications or law enforcement major or minor as their work impacts and helps bring the missing home.
“Persons of color make up 40 percent of the missing population in the United States,” said the Wilson sisters-in-law. “It’s a sad fact that the media and law enforcement take some cases less seriously than others. We want to change that, and it includes the next generation of decision makers/leaders in media and law enforcement.”
The fellows will be provided with an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to visibility of BAMFI’s mission and programs through media as well as social and digital platforms. The scholarship will encourage and support those who will serve as future gatekeepers in law enforcement/criminal justice. Students may apply for the fellowship or scholarship beginning September 19, at blackandmissinginc.com/audiochuck.
