Media Relations Coordinator
Job Summary
As the Media Relations Coordinator at the Black and Missing Foundation, you will have a pivotal role in raising awareness about missing individuals of color. The ideal candidate should have a solid background in communications, public relations, or journalism, coupled with a strong sense of empathy and compassion for the families we support. This part-time position involves amplifying the foundation’s message and securing media coverage for the families we assist. Key duties include arranging interviews, managing inquiries, monitoring coverage, releasing statements, and building journalist relationships. Responsibilities
- Pitch stories to and develop relationships with journalists and media outlets to increase coverage of missing persons of color, ensuring their stories receive the attention they deserve
- Coordinate media interviews for BAMFI representatives and the families we serve
- Respond to media inquiries in a timely and professional manner
- Distribute press releases and media advisories
- Monitor media coverage for relevant news and trends related to missing persons of color, keeping the organization informed and prepared to respond as needed
- Maintain a media contact database and track outreach efforts to ensure effective communication with journalists and influencers covering issues related to missing persons of color
- Evaluate the impact of media relations efforts through Coverage Book, tracking metrics such as media impressions, audience reach, and engagement to inform future communication strategies
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a concentration in public relations, communications or journalism
- 1-3 years of relevant experience, and/or agency experience
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks effectively
- Travel as need for press events
