Cpl. Phyllis Y. Henderson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Rewarding students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, integrity and commitment to serving others.

A total of $5,000 will be awarded to several college-bound high-school students and currently enrolled college students majoring/minoring in Criminal Justice.

In 2020, the Black and Missing Foundation Inc., (BAMFI) established The Cpl. Phyllis Y. Henderson Memorial Scholarship. Cpl. Henderson, a veteran law enforcement official with the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office in Arlington, VA; and an avid supporter and volunteer of BAMFI passed away unexpectedly on August 21, 2018 at the age of 53. Cpl. Henderson served the Arlington, VA community over twenty years with integrity, honor and grace.

About the Scholarship

Honoring the legacy and character of Cpl. Phyllis Y. Henderson, this scholarship rewards college-bound and undergraduate students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, integrity and commitment to serving others and the community support for their educational goals. A minimum of $5,000 will be awarded.

Eligibility / Criteria

The scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors and undergraduate students majoring/minoring in Criminal Justice; and may be used for education-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board. BAMFI will disburse funds directly to the college/university on file.

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a US Citizen
  • Be a graduating high school senior OR enrolled as a part-time/full-time college student (2-year or 4-year college or university)
  • Be able to demonstrate strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 GPA)
    Plan to (or currently) major/minor in Criminal Justice
  • Demonstrate at school or within the community the attributes of leadership, integrity, and community service

Application Process

Applicants must submit all the following items by 5:11PM (EST) on Sunday, May 8, 2022:

  • 2022 Deputy Phyllis Y. Henderson Scholarship Application – You will need a Google account to view/access. (add link here)
  • 2-min Visual Essay, “What is a Community Change Agent and how do you plan to make a difference in your community?”
  • Proof of college/university acceptance (high school seniors – must provide proof of major/minor)
  • Copy of most recent transcript (undergraduates – must include enrollment status and proof of major/minor) – must include GPA

Recipients Announced

The recipients will be announced at BAMFI’s Hope Without Boundaries 5K Run/Walk (National Harbor, Maryland) on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

The Black & Missing Foundation will disburse scholarship funds DIRECTLY to the college/university on file.
